Barton scored 23 points on Tuesday evening to lead his explosive Tigers team to a 97-81 victory over Belmont.
Barton, a preseason All-Conference USA first-team selection, didn't play in Memphis' exhibition games last year because of knee and ankle injuries, and it showed over the Tigers' first two regular-season games. Barton went 2 of 10 from the field and totaled just five points.
In Memphis' two exhibitions wins this month, Barton averaged 24.5 points on 66.7 percent shooting (18 of 27).
In addition to being more selective with his shots, Barton has been a presence on the glass (10 combined rebounds) and has taken better care of the ball (four turnovers in 46 minutes).
"I'm in a comfort zone right now," Barton said. "I'm in Year 2 in the offense so I understand all the plays. I've always been a driver, but last year, coming from the exhibition games, I was hurt. I didn't have trust in my knee or my ankle, so I was settling for jump shots. Then it took me half the season to realize I'm a driver, not a jump-shooter. Now I just keep trying to get to that lane. Attack, attack, attack."
