Rodney McGruder quietly scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds against Texas Tech. He said he was happier about the high rebounding total than anything else that occurred on the court.
After the game, coach Frank Martin said McGruder strutted around the locker room, bragging about the accomplishment. He thought he deserved to.
“He has a heart the size of this building,” Martin said. “He takes an unbelievable amount of pride in doing what it is, what we ask him to do.”
Jamar Samuels overcame an injury for his 22-point, nine-rebound performance against Texas Tech. Samuels said he pulled a muscle in his chest while lifting weights, and has felt discomfort for the last few days.
“I wouldn’t wish this pain on my worst enemy,” Samuels said.
Martin said he told Samuels earlier this week that good players find ways to play through pain.
