Atkins has began to play a bigger role for UVA

Indeed, Tuesday night was more about evaluating the growth of players like Darion Atkins and the potential of players like Jesperson. What exactly can they give Virginia once conference play begins a week from Saturday? That remains somewhat uncertain, but at least we came a little closer to finding out.

Specifically for Atkins, who prior to Tuesday mostly had received playing time in chunks, this game was important for him to be able to get into a rhythm on the floor. He played a career-high 20 minutes.

“I felt more comfortable, obviously,” Atkins said. “Everyone saw that. I just felt like I’m building chemistry with the guys on the court, and I’m just getting a little bit more comfortable with my game. It was a lot of fun.”

Starks scores 20, No. 12 Georgetown knocks off No. 4 Louisville 71-68

Georgetown is more concerned with accumulating wins than making statements with 10 freshmen and sophomores on the roster. Sophomore Markel Starks and freshman Otto Porter made sure the Hoyas did both.

Starks scored 16 of his career-high 20 points in the second half and Porter came up clutch late as No. 12 Georgetown snapped No. 4 Louisville’s 20-game home winning streak with a 71-68 victory Wednesday night in the Big East opener for both teams.

Ian Hummer scores 16 in a loss

Junior forward Ian Hummer finished with 16 points, but he needed 17 shooting possessions to get there and boosted his total with two three-pointers in the final minutes. Siena’s zone, which was clearly designed to stop the Tigers’ post offense, kept Hummer off-balanced and challenged every shot inside, holding the star to 4-for-13 shooting inside the arc.

Georgetown man handles Memphis

Jason Clark scored 18 points and Hollis Thompson added 17 as No. 16 Georgetown beat Memphis 70-59 Thursday night.

Georgetown (10-1) extended its winning streak to eight games. The Hoyas held the lead for the entire game and opened the margin to as much as 20 points before a late surge by Memphis, although the Tigers were unable to complete the comeback.

Thorton has played well for William & Mary

Marcus Thornton a All- Metropolitan in Washington, DC last year. He is a freshman for Willaim & Mary Tribe this year. The Tribe lost a few of their leading scorers from last year, so it was considered a rebuilding year for the program.

Well Marcus Thornton has stepped up as if he was a veteran, by being second on the team in scoring averaging 11 ppg. He is also contributuing 2.2 prg. Thornton hit his season high against Liberty with 19 points. Look out for the talented freshman this year.

Kansas holds off Georgetown.

Late Monday night in Maui, a young and underrated Georgetown Hoyas team gave the no. 14 Kansas Jayhawks a run for their money, but Kanssas grinded out a 67-63 victory.

Thomas Robinson
Throughout the game Kansas played inside out against the Georgetown zone. They penetrated the zone and kicked to Thomas Robinson for 5 of his dunks and then crisply spreader the ball around the perimeter, knocking down jumpers on the perimeter.

The Hoyas simply had no answer for the 6'9 240 power forward Thomas Robinson, who scored 20 points on 7-14 shooting with 12 rebounds and two blocks. Five of his baskets came on dunks, as none of the Hoyas big men had the strength to wrestle with Robinson in the low post or the athleticism to challenge him at the rim.
Jason Clark

Georgetown kept themselves in the game by bombing away from the perimeter, shooting 7-24 from beyond the arc. Hollis Thompson and Jason Clark combined for 29 points while hoisting up 12 three-point shots, with Clark going 1-3 in the final minute as the Jayhawks held off a furious Hoya rally. Jason Clark had 15 points and 5 rebounds.

Will Barton leads Memphis in victory over Belmont

Barton scored 23 points on Tuesday evening to lead his explosive Tigers team to a 97-81 victory over Belmont.
Barton, a preseason All-Conference USA first-team selection, didn't play in Memphis' exhibition games last year because of knee and ankle injuries, and it showed over the Tigers' first two regular-season games. Barton went 2 of 10 from the field and totaled just five points.
In Memphis' two exhibitions wins this month, Barton averaged 24.5 points on 66.7 percent shooting (18 of 27).
In addition to being more selective with his shots, Barton has been a presence on the glass (10 combined rebounds) and has taken better care of the ball (four turnovers in 46 minutes).
"I'm in a comfort zone right now," Barton said. "I'm in Year 2 in the offense so I understand all the plays. I've always been a driver, but last year, coming from the exhibition games, I was hurt. I didn't have trust in my knee or my ankle, so I was settling for jump shots. Then it took me half the season to realize I'm a driver, not a jump-shooter. Now I just keep trying to get to that lane. Attack, attack, attack."

GW has two stars in Taylor and Kromah.

Lasan Kromah

All in all, "Colonials Invasion" was a terrific event that captured what it set out to do - enthusiastically kick off the 2011-2012 college basketball season in front of an eager and excited crowd. For George Washington men's basketball, this year's event has an even more significant meaning: it represents the beginning of the Mike Lonergan Era after a decade with Karl Hobbs at the helm. Lonergan inherits a stacked squad, with four of five starters returning, including preseason All-Atlantic 10 guard Tony Taylor, the Colonials leader last season in scoring, assists and steals.

But don't forget Guard Lasan Kromah is someone to keep tabs on. He returns from a foot injury that forced him to sit out last season. Kromah averaged 11.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 2009-2010.

Jerome Seagears wins Rutgers dunk contest.

Seagears, a 6-foot-1 guard from Silver Spring, Md., along with fellow freshmen Myles Mack and Eli Carter, bear the weight of the Rutgers backcourt after both its starters graduated.

Seagears showed glimpses of his big-play ability in the finals, converting on all three of his dunks and backing up Rice’s prediction in the process.

“It felt great when you really live up to what your coach thinks,”Seagears said. “And I’m the shortest one in the dunk contest. Did you think about that? Height doesn’t mean anything.”
Carter joined Seagears in the contest, capturing everyone in the audience’s

attention, including Kyrie Irving, the No.1 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft and Carter’s close friend.

Syracuse's Joseph has worked hard over the summer.

Joseph, who was named to the preseason All Big East first team, used his summer to improve all aspects of his game. One of the biggest areas of improvement was his strength and conditioning with the goal of finishing better in traffic.

Oliver Purnell and DePaul have found them a diamond in the rough.

Brandon Young is a 6'3 175 stellar freshman point guard. He is from Baltimore, MD, but attended Friendship Collegiate Academy in Washington DC.

Young was a special case among high school basketball players. He only had a few scholarships offers from mid major division 1 schools. Then he joined the Team Takeover AAU program in the summer of 2009. They were a Nike Elite team and attended a number of tournaments, but Young still flew under the radar. Then the premier event of the summer approached. It was the Nike Summer Peach Jam, and Young showed his true colors, performing with major division 1 talent. This tournament he did not go unnoticed. He received many offers from power conferences such as the Big Ten, ACC, and Big East.

As the summer ended Young gave a verbal to DePaul, but shortly after the coach who had recruited him was fired, he de-committed. Then a well known coach in Oliver Purnell was hired by DePaul to feel the coaching vacancy. Young soon recommitted to DePaul.

Even that they are taking this as a rebuilding year, if has been great for Young to get his feet wet in Big East play. Young has received Big East rookie of the week honors once this season and plans to keep it going.

Kris Joseph will not travel with Syracuse to Pittsburgh

The Orangemen head into Pitt tomorrow night for heavyweight battle in the Big East. They will be trying to match the schools best start with a record of 19-0.

They will have their hands full with Pittsburgh, especially considering that the Orangemen will be playing in a hostile enviroment. Pittsburgh is 50-1 at home since February of 2008.

Then Syracuse will be missing their leading scorer Kris Joseph, who is averaging 14.6 ppg. He will not travel because of a concussion he suffered Saturday night against Cincinnati. Joseph was a preseason selection for 1st team Big East all-confrence and one of 50 players selected for the John R. Wooden preseason list.

K-States Samuels & McGruder have a big night against Texas Tech.

Rodney McGruder quietly scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds against Texas Tech. He said he was happier about the high rebounding total than anything else that occurred on the court.

After the game, coach Frank Martin said McGruder strutted around the locker room, bragging about the accomplishment. He thought he deserved to.

“He has a heart the size of this building,” Martin said. “He takes an unbelievable amount of pride in doing what it is, what we ask him to do.”

Jamar Samuels overcame an injury for his 22-point, nine-rebound performance against Texas Tech. Samuels said he pulled a muscle in his chest while lifting weights, and has felt discomfort for the last few days.

“I wouldn’t wish this pain on my worst enemy,” Samuels said.
Martin said he told Samuels earlier this week that good players find ways to play through pain.

Morgan starts off confrence play 3-0

Dewayne Jackson has been the catalyst so far this season averagng 16.6 ppg. There last game he did not have his best performance against South Carolina State, but they edged out a victory. Jackson had 9 points and 10 rebounds.

This season Jackson has to be the primary scorer for the Bears to have success, he was a preseason all-conference selection. With so much pressure on his shoulders, his shooting percentages have gone down, especially from behind the 3 point line. Last year Jackson shot over 40% from behind the arc and now is shooting 26%.

Nevertheless he is expected to continue to shot the ball. Jackson stepped up big in almost all 3 of their games against Top 25 ranked opponents, averaging 20 points. 9pts vs. Syracuse, 22pts vs. Louisville, 29pts vs. Baylor.

Jackson as of now will likely be a candidate for player of the year in the MEAC conference. Their next game will be versus Delaware State in Delaware.
